Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Beta: First Impression

“Stupid! Stupid! Stupid! Why install a service pack beta?” Actually, I was after this fix: Generation of designer file failed: Unable to load one or more of the requested types. It has been driving me nuts which is why I downloaded the SP.

I don’t know what’s up with this, but upon installation of the service pack my dual-core dev box with RAIDed drives started choking big time. If this hardware isn’t fast enough, I don’t know what is. Just switching between code-behind and HTML designer takes 2…3 seconds! Nuts!

Oh, and the service pack didn’t fix my issue. Bummer. No more service pack betas.

Can you send me an email (scottgu@microsoft.com) with more details of the error you are seeing? I haven't heard of people having the issue you are reporting above when installing hte beta, so it would be good to get to the bottom of it.

Thanks,

Scott

See, stuff like this is why I can't imagine wanting to leave the Mac as my native platform. It's the complexity. As you say, beta service packs? What?

I'm not blaming Microsoft. The ubiquity of their software means the tiniest decisions by them can mean thousands and thousands of hours lost to companies. They've got a huge amount of complexity to deal with.

I personally just find it a pain being involved in that.

You know I debated about installing the beta, but end the end I realized I wouldn't loose anything. Without the beta nothing worked for me, my enormous application would not convert properly, it VS constantly crashed all the time... With the beta... everything is sooo awesome for me things actually WORK. It just goes to show you how thing work out.
