Let’s see what we know about Microsoft and Corbis. There’s no definitive source, so I had to look around.

According to wikipedia:

Corbis is a digital imaging/stock photography company founded by Bill Gates in 1989. Its headquarters are located in Seattle, Washington.

According to Gates’ corner at Microsoft:

In addition to his love of computers and software, Gates founded Corbis.

A post at Google Answers mentions:

Corbis is privately held, so financial data about them is very scarce. Their page does list Bill Gates as the companies’ founder.

It is safe to say, therefore, that Bill Gates was the founder of Corbis and co-founder of Microsoft. I wish we could learn more, although some say Corbis is privately held by Gates.

Dan gave the quickest and most detailed answer and is the winner! Carl made an interesting observation.

Speaking about the hubbub over the "Freeny patent", both Corbis and Getty were sued.

Ya'know I intentionally avoided saying Gates "founded" Corbis, as I remember him buying it.

Althought, now that I think about it, I believe he bought some other company's photo archive as used it as the "seed" for Corbis.

Thanks for the mention! I thought if I couldn't be quick or accuate, at least I could (try to) be entertaining. I thought of this similarity while driving home yesterday -- Neither company name appears anywhere within J.D. Salinger's 1951 novella "The Catcher in the Rye." I suppose I would know more about the world around me if I didn't have my head stuck inside Visual Studio so much. :-)
