Flash Abuse Pushed to the Limits

I’m not going to point fingers and ridicule anyone or say what site I found this at, but I wanted to demonstrate Flash abused to an extreme.

An example of failed accessibility

This is what the home page of the site in question presents. I have a couple of problems with this:

  1. Totally inappropriate use of humor. Humor is good, but not when you f*** up Coke’s site.
  2. I have the latest version of all kinds of players and codecs. In this sense I consider myself an early adopter.
  3. Spelling. “It’s”, not “its”.
  4. Total, complete failure to degrade gracefully thus making it inaccessible. Viewing this site in Lynx produces one line, “The official website of Coke xxxxxx.”
  5. Markup does not conform to anything. I guess I can call it “very loose HTML.”
  6. Speaking about markup again, the page has two nested tables and a host of table rows to present a couple of images and a few lines of text (see above). Now, c’mon!

Oh yes, I was talking about Flash… Don’t get me wrong—I like Flash. I like it even more now that I’ve read Flash.NET, but… For Pete’s sake, be reasonable. :)

don't you just love it when developers test for a specific version of a browser or plug-in instead of testing for all above a certain version? Like when IE 6 caused all those sites to kick me out claiming I needed IE5 or better.

It is even worse with Flash because there are so many half-broken ways of checking for Flash that only work on some browsers.

At least the site you mention here has a "continue anyway" link, something that should be required at the very least.

LOL! If you "recon its cool" and click their link, it bounces you to this exact page.

Yo, shouts to the dudes who lumped this s*** together. :) Coke needs to check it out 'cuz they ain't got what they ponied up their dough for.

What about "PLS" for please? First of all how many people are going to know they meant "PLS"? Second, How professional is that?
